ESG Evaluation

Target audience:  Charity trustees, finance and compliance staff, social investment leads, grant‑makers working with ESG criteria.

Duration:  1.5 days (9–10 hours) or three half‑day sessions 

Delivery format:  Mix of lecture, case studies, and group exercises

 

 Learning objectives

- Understand ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) frameworks relevant to the third sector.

- Evaluate a charity’s own ESG performance and impact.

- Use ESG criteria for grant assessment or social investment decisions.

- Align ESG reporting with charity regulatory requirements (e.g., UK Charity Commission).

- Identify greenwashing vs. genuine ESG practice.

 

Example Modules

1. ESG Fundamentals for Non‑Profits 

   - What ESG means in a charity context (not just corporate) 

   - Key frameworks (GRI, SASB, UN SDGs) adapted for charities 

   - Why ESG matters: donor expectations, investment, risk management

 

2. Environmental (E) Evaluation 

   - Carbon footprint measurement for charities 

   - Resource use, sustainable procurement, green operations 

   - Linking environmental performance to mission

 

3. Social (S) Evaluation

   - Social criteria: diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) 

   - Human rights, safeguarding, community engagement 

   - Measuring social value beyond programme outcomes

 

4. Governance (G) Evaluation

   - Board effectiveness, trustee diversity, conflict of interest 

   - Financial controls, transparency, ethical fundraising 

   - Data privacy and cybersecurity

 

5. Applying ESG to Charity Operations 

   - Self‑assessment tools and scorecards 

   - Developing an ESG policy and action plan 

   - Reporting ESG to regulators, funders, public

 

6. ESG in Grant‑Making and Social Investment 

   - Using ESG criteria to screen grantees / investees 

   - Avoiding ESG‑washing and ensuring authenticity 

   - Case studies from foundations and impact investors

 

Outcomes:  Participants will be able to evaluate their organisation’s ESG performance, create a basic ESG report, and apply ESG criteria in funding or investment decisions.
